Travel photography Java, Indonesia

Back in 2012, I travelled to Java, the South East Asian Island nation of Indonesia. I’d already been to Asian countries like Laos, Malaysia, and Thailand in 1999, so I knew a little about what to expect here, but I couldn’t wait to see what Indonesia had in store for me!

Equipped with a camera in hand, and my own set of (hired) wheels, I set about to explore Jakarta. I have visited places like Bogor, Yogyakarta, Borobudur and Pulau Macan, otherwise known as Tiger Island.

The freedom of having my own car, meant I could stop at any opportunity to snap the perfect shot of Indonesia’s stepped rice fields, stunning mountain scenery, and, of course, it’s many temples. Other than stunning scenery, I fell in love with Indonesia thanks to its friendly locals! And unbeatable street food!

Before you take a look at my travel stock photography of Indonesia…

… here are a few of the most beautiful spots to photograph if you ever find yourself in this picturesque archipelago:

  • Raja Ampat Islands; a collection of more than 1,500 islands are surrounded by turquoise seas. With a thriving coral reef, this is a great place for snorkelling too.
  • Candi Borobudur Temple; a complex of three temples that date back to the 9th-century and enjoy a backdrop of Mount Merapi and Mount Merbabu.
  • Mount Bromo, East Java; one of Indonesia’s active volcanoes, you can hike to the neighbouring Mount Penanjakan for stunning photo opportunities.
  • Komodo National Park; as one of the country’s most popular tourist hotspots, this is the place to snap that perfect shot of these three-meter long komodo dragons.
  • Gitgit Waterfall, Singaraja; a 40-meter waterfall hidden in the mountains and surrounded by rice paddies. Take a photo before cooling down in the icy-blue pools at the bottom.
